It is estimated that periodontal disease affects more than 75% of the adult population, this disease is the leading cause of tooth loss in adults. The presence of periodontal (gum) disease affects all systems of the body.

Gum disease increases the risk of heart disease as it is believed that bacteria in the mouth enter the blood stream through inflamed gums and cause small blood clots that contribute to clogged arteries or infections at a distant site like susceptible heart valves or prosthetic joints. Diabetics with gum disease are at greater risk of diabetic complications, and pregnancy may also be affected by gum disease.

Therefore in our office periodontal or gum disease is a condition we screen for and treat with diligence, with our SOFT TISSUE MANAGEMENT protocol. STM is a structured approach to the diagnosis, treatment and maintenance of periodontal disease. The treatment procedures are non-surgical with the hygienists and consist primarily of scaling, root planing and where indicated the use of intracanal antibacterial medications with the Pro-Select 3®.

The patient will see the hygienist for assessment, documentation and evaluation of the present oral condition. Patient involvement and enthusiasm are crucial elements for success. A custom program will be designed which best suits the patient's needs and lifestyle and ultimately will permit the patient to achieve their goals.A maintenace schedule will be set up to monitor progress and ensure continued health of the gum tissues.

Scaling and Root Planing

Scaling and Root Planing is a common non-surgical treatment for periodontal disease. By using special instruments, we remove bacteria and infection from the unhealthy deep pockets around the teeth below the gum line. This is often referred to as a "deep cleaning."

First the tooth is scaled to remove the plaque and tarter that has accumulated on the tooth.

Then the root is planed or smoothed. This eliminates any rough areas on the root that can easily trap plaque and bacteria.

A smooth clean root provides a healthy environment to allow the gums to heal naturally and reattach to the tooth. This will create a reduced pocket, therefore eliminating areas for bacteria to hide and cause further disease.

Scaling and Root Planing combined with a strict home care routine and more frequent periodontal cleanings and exams will increase your chances of keeping your natural smile.

Diode Lasers Diode lasers are proven to be very effective in removing infected gum pocket lining and reducing bacterial counts resulting in pocket depth reduction in many cases.

Advanced Medications

As part of the comprehensive treatment we offer our patients, we have chosen an ultrasonic instrument, the Pro-Select 3®, that is based on piezoelectric techology. This instrument is the latest in ultrasonic techology .This instrument was chosen because of it's effectiveness in removing plaque, tarter and stains while at the same time being more comfortable to the patient than traditional older techology ultrasonic scaling systems.The Pro-Select 3® system also is designed to gently administer medicaments under the gums when needed. Both our hygienists have the Pro-Select 3® system in their respective operatories, as part of their armamentarium in helping our patients with their periodontal care.

Strict Home Care Regimen

A home care routine specific to the patient's individual needs may be prepared to prevent the patient from relapsing. We recommend the Rota-dent® toothbrush to help keep your gums healthy.
